As a broad spectrum antioxidant, BioProtect™ provides support against free radical damage. Free radicals are atoms or molecules containing an unpaired electron, which seeks to reign in other electrons in order to achieve a more stable, less reactive configuration. Free radicals cause biological damage, generally by oxidative processes, and may be expressed directly as damage to cellular components, or indirectly by a disturbance in the redox state of the cell that maintains the metabolic central processes. Through direct damage, free radicals may damage vital components of the cell, including DNA and proteins. For example, free radicals may damage the lens proteins in the eye, leading to age-related degeneration. Free radicals can oxidize LDL cholesterol; oxidized free radicals have been implicated in events that cause damage to arteries. When the body’s natural defenses are overwhelmed, free radicals indiscriminately attack neighbouring molecules. Many chronic conditions have been associated with damage from free radicals, ensuing as a result of an imbalance between radical-generating and radical-scavenging systems. This type of situation is deemed “oxidative stress”. BioProtect™ provides a balanced array of potent antioxidants and synergists, ranging from vitamins and minerals to phytochemicals and powerful antioxidant enzymes, specially formulated for enhanced bioavailability and effectiveness. Antioxidants have the ability to “scavenge” free radicals and inhibit their chain reactions. The multitude of antioxidants included in BioProtect™ play various roles and act in synergy to support the body’s natural defense mechanisms. For example, natural carotenoids are able to quench singlet oxygen, thereby inhibiting free radical chain reactions. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase are supplied via our specially grown, biologically active vegetable culture. SOD is our primary enzymatic free radical scavenger, and is the only enzyme specifically designed to disarm free radicals in the body. Additional antioxidants and synergists supplied in Bio-Protect™ include: vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, CoQ10, Glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, L-methionine, potassium sorbate, and taurine.
